For over a decade, my life has been defined by Rock and Ore. I have spent countless hours at the workbench, lost in the process of forging silver and selecting raw, elemental stones. But if I am being honest, for much of that time, I was hiding behind the work.
I’m in my 40s now, and I’ve realised that how I show up for myself physically has a profound impact on how I show up for my business mentally.
The Connection Between Style and Mindset
When you work for yourself—especially in a creative studio—it is incredibly easy to let “comfy” become the default. For a long time, I stayed in the shadows of oversized knits and safe colours. But I’ve found that on the days I don’t get “properly” dressed, my focus slips. My energy feels heavy.
Getting dressed has become my daily anchor. It isn’t about vanity or following fleeting trends; it is about identity.
Finding the Rockstar Witchy Aesthetic
I’ve recently been leaning into what I call my Rockstar Witchy vibe. It’s a blend of the edgy, the industrial, and the ethereal. For me, that means:
- Cool Winter Tones: Swapping muddy browns for crisp whites, charcoal greys, and deep, moody blacks that make my silver jewellery sing.
- Structured Silhouettes: Embracing my hourglass shape with high-waisted wide-leg jeans and tucked-in layers that feel powerful rather than restrictive.
- The Details: Adding that “edge” with dark beaded ties, heavy boots, and—of course—handcrafted silver.
Forging a New Path
This journey of “finding my style in my 40s” is happening alongside the evolution of Rock and Ore. When I put on a pair of stomper boots and a statement pendant I’ve forged myself, I feel grounded. I feel like the artisan I am.
If you’ve been feeling a bit lost in the “middle years,” I encourage you to look at your wardrobe not as a chore, but as a toolkit for your mental health. Sometimes, the right piece of jewellery or the perfect high-waisted fit is exactly what you need to reclaim your spark.
I’m starting to share more of this personal style journey over on TikTok. It’s raw, it’s a bit edgy, and it’s a work in progress—much like a piece of silver before it hits the flame.
How does getting dressed affect your headspace? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
