Shells, Selkies, and Sea Glass: Folklore of the Shore

Along the rugged Scottish coastline, stories rise and fall like the tides. From glistening sea glass to smooth pebbles, the beach has always been a place where magic brushes against the ordinary — a liminal space between land and sea, reality and myth.

One of the most enchanting legends is that of the selkie — beings who wear the skin of a seal, slipping between sea and shore, freedom and longing. Selkies are known to fall in love with landfolk, only to vanish back to the waves when their seal skin is returned. The story speaks of transformation, loss, and the irresistible pull of where we truly belong.

In folklore, sea glass was thought to be mermaid tears — shed from sorrow or joy, washed ashore as tiny talismans. Each shard, tumbled by the sea, becomes a softened fragment of something once sharp. To hold one is to hold time, change, and memory.

Driftwood, shells, and sea-worn pebbles carry stories too. Some coastal traditions believe that if you whisper a wish into a shell and return it to the sea, the tide may carry your desire into the realm of the Fae.

The Beachcomber Collection is inspired by these tales — tiny treasures and wearable memories that celebrate coastal folklore and the beauty of nature’s castoffs. Each charm is a keepsake from the tide: sea glass, silver shells, and ocean-kissed stones.

Whether you walk the shoreline or simply dream of it, may you carry a little sea-magic with you.
